One juice and two smoothies that are loaded with benefits

Juices and smoothies are typically loaded with sugar. Natural or not, sugar is still sugar. While it’s best to keep sugar intake down, sometimes it’s not a bad idea to replace a typical meal with one of these nutrient-dense drinks. Once or twice a week, or anytime you’d like, enjoy one of these.

    PINK LEMONADE

It’s always best to keep things simple during a cleanse and this recipe does just that by using only 3 fresh ingredients. Green apple, beetroot and lemon. This combo creates the most vibrant pink color with the perfect balance of sweet and sour flavors. Try it, it’s epic.

    INGREDIENTS

    Makes 1 serving

    4 green apples, roughly chopped
    ½ lemon, peeled
⅛ inch slice of red beetroot

Run all ingredient through a juicer according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Enjoy.

    ORANGE TURMERIC SMOOTHIE

This refreshing smoothie provides a solid hit of vitamin C, omega 3’s, and fiber to help your body cleanse. It goes down smooth and gives a big boom of citrus flavor right at the first sip. The added turmeric root delivers anti-inflammatory benefits and assists in elevating the body’s liver detoxification enzymes to help aid the cleansing process. This simple combination of fresh whole foods can help boost your immune system, hydrate you, and kickstart your cleanse.

    INGREDIENTS

    Makes 1 serving

    2 oranges, peeled
    2 bananas
    1 tbs hemp seeds
½ inch chunk fresh turmeric (or ¼ tsp ground)
    ½ cup filtered water
    ½ cup ice, optional
Pinch black pepper, optional (see note below)

Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender until smooth (about 30-45 seconds). Pour into a tall glass and enjoy.

NOTE: Curcumin is the active component in turmeric that is responsible for decreasing inflammation and stimulating the body’s antioxidant mechanisms. However, the curcumin gets converted by enzymes (sulfotransferase, UGT, p450) that line the GI tract, making it bio-unavailable.

A flavonoid (quercetin), found in apples and oranges, inhibits sulfotransferase enzymes from inactivating the curcumin. The piperine found in black pepper inhibits the UGT and p450 enzymes from doing the same. So blend your turmeric with apples, citrus, or other foods high in quercetin and a pinch of black pepper.

    BLACK CHERRY SMOOTHIE

If you love dark cherries, get ready to fall in love with this antioxidant-rich detox drink. This combination of cherry, apple, blueberry and chia mixed with coconut water, turns an ordinary smoothie into an indulgent masterpiece. The color is beautiful, the texture is amazing and the flavor is spot-on. We promise that it will leave you feeling energized and ready to conquer your cleanse.

    INGREDIENTS

    Makes 1 serving

1.5 cups fresh pitted cherries or frozen
    2 small red apples, cored
    ½ cup fresh blueberries
    1 tbs chia seeds
½ cup coconut water (or filtered water)
    1 cup ice, optional

Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender until smooth (about 30-45 seconds). Pour into a large glass and enjoy.

  • The 3-day Detox workout plan for a slow and steady party recovery

The 3-day Detox workout plan for a slow and steady party recovery

The summer makes us all a little weird. Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day, Fourth of July… it’s like full-blown party mode. These are the months that can crack even the most dedicated fitness buffs. Then again, there some of us that figure, if we train like a lunatic and eat clean 99% of the time, what’s the big deal it we get a little buzz on and eat crap food? Well, it’s not a big deal. But be prepared for a slower start to the next week.

Don’t think we need to tell you the effects of alcohol on the body. It’s not good, but whatever. This isn’t a regular thing… For some good ideas on how to find the happy medium, check out this strategy piece on how to drink alcohol and still build muscle and lose weight.

The Detox workout plan is not a gimmick—here’s how it works

It sure sounds like one. Maybe we should have thought of that beforehand? Well, it’s not a gimmick. It’s a cool name. We think so anyway. The Detox workout plan is simply a scaled-back week of workouts. Let us explain as best as possible:

You start the night with a couple beers. Then toss in some pizza or wings. Then the tequila shots come out. Before you know it, it’s 3:30AM, you’ve got a shard of glass in your big toe, your left rib feels oddly sore, and the $60 bucks that was in your wallet has magically disappeared.

Fast-forward to 1130AM or whenever your slow, stinky, dehydrated body gets out of bed (or off the floor), the gym and working out is the last thing on your mind. Here’s what you do:

Start drinking water aggressively and either take the day off or decide to get into the gym right away. But, if you think you’re going to do a 10-round circuit you’re on delusional. You’re going to need something a bit easier. Something to stimulate your muscles, wake up your metabolism, but chilled out enough so you don’t want to hurl. That’s the Detox workout plan. Consider it a reset. If you enjoy this Detox workout plan, make sure to check out the version 2.0 of the Detox workout plan.

    Directions

You can begin following this immediately, or wait until Monday morning. Complete for one week then get back onto your regular training schedule. Don’t have a plan? Well, we’ve got over 30 of them that are completely FREE.

  • The Detox Workout Plan v2.0

    The Detox Workout Plan v2.0

ONE, TWO, THREE too many. We’ve all been there.

Truth is: Alcohol is a diuretic, and diuretics cause dehydration. Dehydration reduces protein synthesis which hampers the body’s ability to build and rebuild muscle. Dehydration will also reduce performance in the gym itself.

In fact, alcohol consumption (especially on a regular basis) can actually lead to negative changes in the elements of muscle cells, according to a study published in The American Journal of Pathology. The study’s findings suggest that alcohol can lead to impairment of skeletal muscle—as well as heart—function.

What’s more: Alcohol is a depressant. While your mood may seem elevated at party time, the following days can be filled with anxiety and jitters.

Sorry, see what we did there? Here’s the plan to get your body (and head) back on track.

    How it works

This blend of strength and hypertrophy training, high-intensity interval training, and yoga will get you back to building muscle and firing your metabolism with moments that promote relaxation and a clear head.

    Directions

You will work out five days per week, ideally Monday through Friday with Saturdays and Sundays as rest/recovery days. Complete workout one in the morning and workout two in the evening. Follow this program for 2-4 weeks.

  • 4 Healthy Detox Shots to Drink on the Regular

4 Healthy Detox Shots to Drink on the Regular

There’s something about waking up on a weekend morning and putting together a big ol glasses of healthy stuff. I mean, you can mix all kinds of things together. Hell, even if it tastes like dirt I like it. Why? Because it’s just something I get enjoyment out of—I know I’m pumping good into me. It’s not something I do everyday, and it’s not an obsession. I genuinely just like doing it. And when I don’t have time to make one, I even love walking down the street to buy it. Simple things. Simple things…
