The cold weather is right around the corner for most of us; the last thing you need to do is sit inside. Take full advantage of what’s left of the summertime with venturing into new watersports. Nothing is better than heading to the beach or lake for fun but when you know you’ll get a workout in at the same time – it’s the best of both worlds. Here are 5 watersports to try before fall.
1. Paddleboarding
The sensation of surfing is often said to be, “only a surfer knows”… Since you don’t have time to spend hours upon hours learning one of the hardest sports known, why not cheat the hard part and rent a paddleboard? Standing up on a paddleboard takes no effort and with a simple Google search you’ll even see paddleboard yoga classes being taught across the nation. While there are calm forms of the sport, you can also turn paddleboarding into a full body workout that will shred fat off your core in no time.
2. Surf Kayaking
If you have the beach nearby, I’m sure you’ve seen a thousand different ways of playing with the waves that roll in. One fairly uncommon way of riding waves is surf kayaking. These kayaks are controlled in the same way as a lake or river kayak but differ in design to allow you to harness the energy of the ocean. Riding small ripples to double overhead barreling waves, surf kayaking can be as extreme or as calm as you want to handle.
3. Wakeboarding
With the increased amount of cable parks around the country finding a way to wakeboard is much easier than what it was even just ten years back. There is now no need to find someone with a boat, all the equipment, or the hardest to find – friends with extra cash for gas. Cable parks are all inclusive, allowing you to rent all the gear you need and offering an easier learning curve to a challenging sport.
4. Bodyboarding
Now I know what you’re thinking, “I had a boogieboard when I was a kid.” Boogieboarding’s big brother is the real deal called bodyboarding. Requiring the same amount of skill to read waves that a surfer has, a bodyboarder can pick and ride waves many surfers cannot catch. For someone new to the sport, getting your hands on a bodyboard and fins is much more realistic than dropping hundreds of dollars on a surfboard. Do yourself a favor and step up from the beachbreak waves with the kids – the real deal bodyboarding happens way past the pier and is guaranteed to give you a workout.
5. Deep Sea Fishing
A definite curveball in your world of sports but when your entire week is filled with making money, hardcore workouts, and stress in general, why not take the time to get away? Deep sea fishing often exposes a newbie’s interest in fishing in general. Taking a charter a few miles off the coast ensures you’re in the right spot but when you get a man-sized fish on the other end… welcome to the struggle. Some fights last only a few minutes but deep sea fishing fights can last hours. Your legs, arms, and back will be on fire just so you can take that classic picture with your catch. A simple change in location takes boring fishing and turns it into a whole different sport.
