The journey of 1,000 steps starts with the the first one, and in the mind of a Spartan no one is left behind. It is not the physical action of that step but the mental knowing that one can do the impossible, or what they thought to be.
Before we go further here are some guidelines Spartans live by, this is given to all clients to look at it everyday.
-A Spartan pushes their mind and body to their limits.
-A Spartan masters their emotions
-A Spartan learns continuously
-A Spartan gives generously
-A Spartan leads
-A Spartan stands up for what they believe in, no matter the cost.
The Spartan Mindset varies day in and day out from life obstacle to obstacle. One day you may see a 12 foot wall to climb and think you yourself maybe this isn’t for me, next time you see that wall you will have the confidence to know you can.
Key components of being a Spartan are what we coaches break down as the 7 Pillars, these are all physical and mental aspects of the overall view they rank as followed: Stamina, Power, Athleticism, Readiness, Tenacity, Attitude, Nutrition.
Stamina: from the physical and mental side are big components. Many have to learn not to slow down just because there is a 9 foot wall in the way and having the same energy at the end of the race as you did at the beginning as well as dealing with work expectations, family expectations or other outside stressors. It is this that make us Spartans
Power
Comes from EmPOWERment, the power to make change, build confidence, accountability. This then leads to achieving physical goals, which lead to more goal setting and being truly aware of what Is capable of. At the end of the day you are in “charge” of your own life.
Athleticism
Reactivity, agility, ability, broad development of all dimensions of fitness related to Spartan Racing for some this is the biggest challenge. Sometimes we need to react to a change in circumstances or conditions. But it is done in a way that is consistent with our values.
Readiness
Total fitness, ready to take on any challenge. Knowing your why and connecting with your purpose, removing negativity and unnecessary work.
Tenacity
This means nothing can go wrong, even when it appears to others that it has. Without tenacity any career in obstacle racing will be short lived. Tenacity means living up to the Spartan code no matter the cost. Reminding someone why they started.
Attitude
This is the positive state of mind held by individuals despite deteriorating conditions. Previous failure does not stand in the way of a Spartan, in fact, Spartan law prohibited warriors from ever backing down in the face of adversity. Attitude and positivity are an essential part of being a Spartan; without them even elite fitness is as useless as running on a treadmill expecting to finish somewhere other than where you started.
Nutrition
Is about being prepared for a challenge biomechanically. Strong nutrition gives your health and fitness the ammunition it needs to perform. We live on a country where 90% of the population claims to have good nutrition yet two-thirds are overweight. Nutrition is about self experimentation and a keen eye. Without the right nutrition all of the the other pillars are hollow. They may look good on the outside but without Nutrition, they will not bear the full weight of living the Spartan Lifestyle.
Know You’re Ready…
Spartans think always on the positive and optimistic side no matter what is in front of them. Never that they can’t but what’s the best way I CAN. It may not have an answer at first but through the journey, the training, the lifestyle one learns more about themselves and the power they truly have inside. All goals are achievable once we believe we can, setting up a plan of action and methodically chipping away at the small goals ( run 1 more minute, drink 2 more glasses, eat better high quality foods), to get to the big goal ( complete a Spartan, find that true warrior within).
Most people, when they first decide they want to do a Spartan Race, that is the initial shift in mindset. They have just found their outlet through scaling walls, and carrying heavy sandbags up a hill. When many first start their warm-up is the workout, legs burning from the endless squats, heart racing from the burpees, arms shaking from the push-ups and bear crawls. Rep by Rep, minute by minute, meal by meal they are getting better not just for a race bug for a lifestyle. We are all in this together and part of the Spartan Ethos is no man or woman left behind. The mindset overall is that you have a team of individuals more like family depending on you and the most important thing you can do is NOT ever give up.
DON’T STOP WHEN YOU’RE TIRED, STOP WHEN YOU’RE DONE.
